Winston Churchill served under six Monarchs:
Queen Victoria: June 20, 1837 – January 22, 1901
King Edward VII: January 22, 1901 – May 6, 1910
King George V: May 6, 1910 – January 20, 1936
King Edward VIII: January 20, 1936 – December 11, 1936 (abdicated)
King George VI: December 11, 1936 – February 6, 1952
Queen Elizabeth II: February 6, 1952 – September 8, 2022
The Prince of Wales was proclaimed King George V following his father’s death on 6 May 1910, and his Coronation took place at Westminster Abbey on 22 June 1911.
King George visited India in 1911, the only monarch to do so as King-Emperor. He was accompanied by his wife, Queen Mary.
In 1914 the First World War broke out. The King made 450+ visits to troops and 300+ visits to hospitals visiting wounded servicemen. He advocated for the proper treatment of German prisoners-of-war and urged more humane treatment of conscientious objectors.
In 1917 anti-German feeling led him change his surname from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor (after the Castle of the same name).
He died on 20 January 1936; his eldest son Edward succeeded to the throne as Edward VIII.
An excellent photograph of the King in the original folder and envelope – signed and dated by him on the mount.
