Churchill Carving in a Tagua Nut

A good likeness probably done by a serviceman during World War Two. ‘Churchill’ carved out on the back side.

A very small item. Tagua nuts typically measure approx 1.5″x1.5″.
The carving of Churchill is supported on another tagua nut as its base: total height is approx: 6″ tall.

Tagua nuts are known as Vegetable Ivory due to the similarities to standard ivory. Artisans and wood carvers have used them for many years to make buttons, dominos, chess pieces, netsukes (Japanese carvings), dice, and many other small items. Nowadays, modern plastics have replaced nearly all products once made from tagua nuts.

The Amazonian Indians believe that the tagua nut brings prosperity, happiness, love and abundance. Mayans, Incas, Aztecs, and natives of South and Central America used Tagua for emotional and spiritual health and well-being.
