Galley Proofs for Woods’ First Edition: A Bibliography of the Works of Sir Winston Churchill

The first edition of Woods’ Churchill bibliography was published in 1963 by Nicholas Vane. This set of galley proofs appear to have been Woods’ actual set.

Printed on rectos only.
106 numbered (2 unnumbered, 104 numbered, plus a sheet 46a, but lacking sheet 80 (possible a blank).

Horizontal soft fold at center: a little soiled and edge worn, but in very good condition.
In a very nice blue half morocco folding box and further protected in a blue cloth inner wrapper.
Bright gilt lettering to spine together with raised bands.
Measures approx. 10.5″ x 13″ x 2.25″.

Signed by Woods on the title-page and on the contents page with his alteration of the dedication in ink. (see images) Changed from ‘Peter and Barbara’ to ‘Elizabeth’; presumably Peter was Peter Metcalfe who worked with him (Woods) on the concept of the bibliography.

Loosely inserted is an autograph letter signed from Woods to an owner of these proofs explaining

“I have done as you asked & added a small correction on the galley. You may care to note that the 3 items in section C are wrong descriptions: Not 12, 44, 56… these will be corrected in the 2nd edition, if any.”

Stationery used is from 15, Richmond Bridge Mansions, East Twickenham, Middlesex, and dated 18 Sept. 1965.
