Winston Churchill: Bhutan Stamps + Original Artwork
Bhutan Stamps + Original Artwork Commemorating the Battle of Britain
These stamps were issued 25th July 1967 in commemoration of Churchill and the Battle of Britain. Of importance here is the original artwork for these 3 stamps.
The original artwork accompanying these stamps from Bhutan, which have Sir Winston Churchill printed in the corner, makes this very interesting.
Bhutan, officially known as the Kingdom of Bhutan, is a landlocked state in South Asia at the eastern end of the Himalayas. It is surrounded by India to the West and the South and by China to the North. The Bhutanese call it Druk Yul which means land of the Thunder Dragon. The country was only opened up to foreigners in the 1970’s.
– The 2NU displays a Supermarine Spitfire Fighter
– The 4NU displays an Hawker Hurricane IIC Fighter
– The 45CH displays an Avro Lancaster Bomber
Apparently the miniature sheets were not issued in Bhutan.
Overprinted in black “Sir Winston Churchill” together with a hand showing the V victory sign beneath it: this is placed at the bottom left corner on the 45CH stamp featuring an Avro Lancaster Bomber, but in the bottom right corner of the 2NU stamp featuring a Supermarine Spitfire Fighter and the 4NU stamp featuring an Hawker Hurricane IIC Fighter.
