"One Of The Largest Private Collections To Come On The Market"
Churchill Books, Churchilliana & EphemeraTributes for an Eightieth Birthday
Presented to Churchill on his 80th birthday: Tributes for an Eightieth Birthday
This book is a lavish production: the binding is full padded blue calf skin with the Churchill crest in gilt on the front cover, raised bands on the spine with the V for Victory sign in gilt in each of the panels. It comes in a blue buckram slipcase along with the original box. It is printed on hand-made deckle-edged paper.
The tributes contained in the book as the result of a letter sent out by Ronald Staples the Chairman of Truth inviting foremost leaders in all walks of life to say what were their reactions on the early speeches made by Churchill as Prime Minister in the early part of 1940.
The book includes responses by:
Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt
The Archbishop of Canterbury
Field Marshal the Earl Alexander of Tunis
The Right Hon. L. S. Amery
The Right Hon. Lord Chandos
The Right Hon. Lord Hore-Belisha of Devonport
Lady Diana Cooper
Major General Edward Spears
Captain Peter & Odette Churchill
Dame Myra Hess
+ many others
Despite researching this book I have no information on number of copies, printer or binder, but my guess would be that somewhere between 25 and 50 copies were produced with a copy being presented to each of the contributors. This is the only copy I have come across in 55 years of collecting Churchill.
