Queen Victoria Chocolate Tin Box

In 1899 the Queen sent a box (tin) of chocolates to all the Officers and Soldiers serving in South Africa during the Second Boer War. Imprinted on the lid:

South Africa 1900

I wish you a very happy New Year –

Victoria

The tin contained chocolate from one of the 3 suppliers, J.S. Fry& Sons, Cadbury Brothers Ltd. and  Rowntree & Company Ltd. All three Companies donated the chocolates at no charge.

The tin box was designed by Barclays & Fry Ltd. of Southwark and was paid for by the Queen. A total of 123,000 tins of chocolate was was sent to the troops by the end of 1900.

Presumably Churchill received one of these but I can’t claim that this was the one.

They are quite collectable by Boer War collectors.
