Earl Jowitt: Labour’s first post-war Lord Chancellor was widely respected in the legal profession for his forensic abilities. His political career, however, was marked with controversy. He defected to Labour from the Liberals in 1929 but was then expelled from Labour in 1936. He served in Churchill’s wartime coalition government as solicitor-general, becoming Lord Chancellor following the election of 1945. Following the last promotion Churchill (who had considerable personal experience of crossing the floor) said of Jowitt, “He has disgraced the name of rat!”
Condition: Spine faded. Stain to front board top right (see picture). Contents very good.
