The Legion Book, First Edition, with a copperplate title page vignette by Stephen Gooden, a portrait frontispiece of King George V.
19 illustrations in the text, and 32 collotype plates, some in color, 4to.
Original full white pigskin binding, decorated in gilt and blind tooling after a design by Charles Ricketts. Top edge gilt.
Preserved in the original, numbered, fleece-lined, red buckram clamshell box, itself preserved inside a custom quarter red morocco book-like clam-shell box with raised bands and gilt title on the spine.
The edition was limited to 100 numbered copies finely printed on hand made paper at the Curwen Press. None of the copies were for sale, they were made as gifts from the Prince of Wales. This is copy no. 73.
This magnificent work was dedicated to the Prince of Wales (the future King Edward VIII) who was patron of the British Legion, and published in aid of the Legion, contains superb illustrations, articles, stories and poems by leading artists and writers of the day.
Most of the literary and artistic contributions in this volume appeared nowhere else. The 100 hundred copies were only for presentation by H.R.H. The Prince of Wales (the future King Edward VIII). Apart from the superb illustrations by prominent artists there are 33 articles, stories and poems by leading writers of the day. It is signed by 89 of the contributors including Winston Churchill whose contribution is a two page essay on the recently deceased Field Marshal Douglas Haig.
Minchin collected a remarkable group of well-knowns to contribute to and sign the book including authors, artists, Prime Ministers, the French President. Here’s a partial list:
