Paul Ludwig Hans Anton von Beneckendorff und von Hindenburg, known as Paul von Hindenburg was born in Posen Prussia (now Poznan, Poland) in 1847. He died in 1934.

Paul von Hindenburg was a German Field Marshal (German Generalfeldmarschall) during World War I and second president of the Weimar Republic 1925-34. His presidential terms were wracked by political instability, economic depression, and the rise to power of Adolf Hitler, whom he opposed but finally agreed to appoint as Chancellor of Germany in January 1933.

Around the outer edge of the medal: “REICHSPRÄSIDENT VON HINDENBURG 1847-1927”

Churchill’s book Great Contemporaries, contains biographies of the 25 men he (Churchill) considered to be the greatest figures of the time. Paul von Hindenburg is one of these men. 2 different versions of Churchill’s Great Contemporaries are listed on this website (more to come). Here’s a copy signed by Winston Churchill.
