Handwritten Letter: Alexander, 1st Earl of Tunis

Handwritten Letter from 1st Earl Alexander of Tunis, British Field Marshal with Original Stamped Envelope

Letter dated April 23, 1963 from Harold Alexander, 1st Earl Alexander of Tunis (1891-1969) British Field Marshal, to Mr Jacob Bacal, New York attorney.

Alexander was made British commander in chief in the Mediterranean area in 1942, where he, together with his chief field commander, General Bernard Montgomery, were very successful. Together they reorganized British forces and drove the Germans back from Egypt and across North Africa until the surrender of the Germans in Tunis in May 1943.

The autograph letter on personal stationery is in blue ink & measures 6.25” x 9”. It is signed “Alexander” & dated April 23rd, 1963. The envelope was addressed by Alexander too.

“…I have always felt that it was a great Honour to have commanded American soldiers in battle – and I am grateful to them for the great contribution they made to our common victory….”

My research of Mr Jacob Bacal reveals that as well as being a well-known attorney, he was also an avid autograph collector.

The letter has a fold across the center otherwise in Fine Condition.
