Churchill’s Authentic Signature + 9 others during the Second Boer War
This page of signatures is believed to have been removed from the Visitor Book at Groote Schuur in Rondebosch, Cape Town, which belonged to Cecil Rhodes from 1893.
The date accompanying each signature is 1900. During the Boer War (1899-1902) Churchill served as a correspondent for the Daily Mail and Morning Post and as a Lieutenant in the South African Light Horse regiment.
A good, bold, dark fountain pen ink signature (‘Winston S. Churchill’) and date, 6th April 1900, in his hand at the center of a 4to page removed from a visitor book.
The page also features nine other signatures:
Prince Alexander of Teck (1874-1957) 1st Earl of Athlone, British Major-General, Governor General of South Africa 1924-30 and Governor General of Canada 1940-46.
George S. White (1835-1912) British Field Marshal, Victoria Cross winner for his actions at Charasiah in Afghanistan, 6th October 1879. White commanded the garrison at the Siege of Ladysmith 1899-1900.
Hugh Grosvenor (1879-1953) 2nd Duke of Westminster who served in the Second Boer War with the Imperial Yeomanry as an ADC to Lord Roberts and Lord Milner.
Joseph Laycock (1867-1952) British Brigadier-General who served with the Nottinghamshire (Sherwood Rangers) Yeomanry in South Africa during the Second Boer War.
Prince Adolphus of Teck (1868-1927) 1st Marquess of Cambridge, British Lieutenant-Colonel who served in the Second Boer War.
Margaret Cambridge (1873-1929) Marchioness of Cambridge, Duchess of Teck, wife of Prince Adolphus of Teck.
Leo Amery (1873-1955) British Politician who served as a correspondent for The Times during the Second Boer War.
Lady Elizabeth Harriet Grosvenor (1856-1928) Marchioness of Ormonde.
George Milne (1866-1948) 1st Baron Milne, British Field Marshal who served in the Second Boer War.
All have signed in bold black fountain pen inks at dates between 23rd March and 8th April 1900. With some pencil annotations in the hand of the noted autograph collector Ray Rawlins.
