Character Tobacco Jar with Lid (Ashtray) in the image of Winston Churchill
This item was called a Tobacco Jar – by removing the hat, tobacco could be stuffed inside. Then with the lid (ashtray) replaced you had a self contained tobacco jar/ashtray. These items were popular in the 1940’s.
T. Lawrence, Falcon Ware stamped on the base of the character jar and the hat.
Date manufactured: 1940’s
These are very scarce today. So often the hat is broken, since it just sits on top; it does not attach. Many lidded pottery items such as this one are picked up for inspection without realizing the hat is removable – and it falls off and breaks. Too late…
