General Hastings Lionel Ismay, 1st Baron Ismay, served as Churchill’s chief military assistant and staff officer during WWII. After the war he became Lord Mountbatten’s chief of Burma staff in India and then the first Secretary General of NATO. Upon retirement in 1957 he began writing his memoirs. The Memoirs of General Lord Ismay. Ismay’s Memoirs contain a tribute to Lord Ismay from Churchill.
On 26th September, 1960 a dinner was held to celebrate the publication of Lord Ismay’s Memoirs. Attendees included Sir Winston Churchill and Viscount Cunningham of Hyndhope. (Commander-in-Chief, Mediterranean Fleet during WWII)
