Welcome
"One of the Largest Private Collections to Come on the Market"Churchill Portrait: Miniature
Portrait of Churchill on Ivory by Jan Markut
Artist: Jan Markut, the Polish artist (from my research I believe he lived from 1881 – 1944)
Measures approx. 4” x 3”
Jan Markut was trained at the finest art schools of the time in the German block. His roommate was a mistress of the Third Reich so he hid his valuable paintings under her bed to protect them from the Nazis. When he finally escaped to America he settled in Florida.
He made his own tempera paints with ground eggshells and often carved his frames. The brush he used to paint this portrait on ivory was made from a single blade of horse hair.
It was exhibited at the London School of Miniatures Show – quite rare for someone not from Great Britain to be admitted into this show.
This is a one of a kind work of art.
