Welcome
"One of the Largest Private Collections to Come on the Market"The War Against the Dutch Republics
First and only edition of this scarce publication
This bibliographically important and quite scarce publication contains four early Churchill contributions from his war correspondent days and his earliest days in Parliament. This is the first volume appearance of each of these Churchill pieces. Moreover, this is the only known appearance in any form of Churchill’s telegram to the Manchester Guardian of 2 April 1900.
Churchill’s contributions to the publication include:
(1) an article at pp 149-50 bearing a date-line of 20 November 1899 in the Morning
Post on Boer treatment of the wounded
(2) a statement in the House of Commons of 18 February 1901 (p.199)
(3) a telegram to the Manchester Guardian of 2 April 1900 (p.208)
(4) an extract from an address of 17 August 1900 at the Guildhall, Plymouth (p.297)
First and only edition, first binding state.
According to Cohen “Copies were originally issued in moderate red paper-covered boards with a cloth spine reading vertically up.” This is such a copy, in very good condition given the fragile nature of the publication. The binding remains bright, and entirely original, with no restoration or repairs. The red paper covered boards show only light soiling and small losses of the red paper at the corners and edges. Original cloth spine remains intact and unfaded, with clearly legible spine titling. The spine shows wear at the ends and hinges & back cover detached. The contents are surprisingly clean and bright, with the exception of the endpapers which are browned. No spotting. No inscriptions. What appears to be a small bookseller sticker is affixed at the bottom corner of the front pastedown.
A very nice copy of a very scarce item for any Churchill Book Collector.
