Anglo Saxon Review (10 Vols) Inscribed by Lady Randolph Churchill

Published by Lady Randolph Churchill

Inscribed by Lady Randolph Churchill in the first volume.

The publication ran from June 1989 – Sept. 1901.

10 volumes handsomely bound in styles of elaborate famous bindings; the varying facsimile bindings are in morocco and are copies of celebrated originals including a Samuel Mearne, a book for James 1st, and a Derome. There are notes inside about the bindings which were organized by Cyril Davenport.

This quarterly miscellany of essays, stories, poetry and drama was edited by Lady Randolph Churchill, Winston Churchill’s mother, who also contributed articles to it. It also includes an essay by Winston in vol. VIII about the British Cavalry a subject he was well equipped to write on having taken part in the last British cavalry charge at Omdurman in Sudan. This was the first appearance of this essay. He supported his Mother in her venture, but disagreed with her on the name she chose: Anglo Saxon Review

The set is inscribed by Lady Churchill as follows:

This set of the Anglo Saxon Review is presented to Mr. Thomas Leighton by Lady Randolph Churchill in remembrance of the excellent work he did & are his

1899 – 1901

Unfortunately the leather used for the bindings was of poor quality and so they have not withstood 120+ years as well as other books, predominantly the earlier volumes. Vol IV spine is sunned.

Contents are Fine. Strong, clean, no foxing.
