Jeremy Wilson’s authoritative and well-illustrated catalogue, published to accompany the major exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery on commemorating the centenary of Lawrence’s birth. The exhibition contained a large number of items drawn from private and public collections including those of All Souls College, Oxford, the Bodleian Library, the British Library, the Imperial War Museum, and the Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives, King’s College London. A significant number of them were previously unpublished.

All but one of the introductory essays which preface the eight sections were adapted from a previously unpublished biography of Lawrence, which Wilson and Ian Wood wrote in 1986; the essay on Seven Pillars of Wisdom was adapted from the text of a talk which Wilson gave to the Oxford Bibliographical Society in 1985.
