Welcome
"One of the Largest Private Collections to Come on the Market"Cabinet Card – Jennie Jerome – Churchill’s Mother
Cabinet Card of Winston Churchill’s Mother, Lady R. Churchill. (A Cabinet Card is a style of photograph used primarily for portraits before Kodak came out with the Brownie camera in the 1900s)
Jennie Jerome (1854-1921) was an American born British Socialite who married Lord Randolph Spencer Churchill in 1874. Winston Churchill was born that same year.
The popularity of Cabinet Cards grew in the 1870s because they are larger (measuring ~ 4”x6.5”) than the Carte de Visite (CdV) which is ~ 2.5”x4”. These larger cards were displayed on cabinets so visitors could easily see them, hence the name Cabinet Cards. Kodak’s Brownie camera grew in popularity in the early 1900s and by 1924 Cabinet Cards were no longer produced.
Measures: 4″ x 6.5″
