Churchill Centenary – Cigar Box by Stuart Devlin, Silver & Gilt

Magnificent, rare, silver and gilt sculptured cigar box from the London silversmith Stuart Devlin. This box was commissioned by “The Heritage Collection” and strictly limited to 50 copies of which only 30 copies were for the UK market. The cigar box shown here is No. 27. The output from Devlin’s workshop in the City of London was only 3 per week at the time so it is likely that most of the boxes were delivered in 1975. The silver content is approximately 900 grams, and the box measure 9.25 inches x 5.25 inches x 2.25 inches. There is a sculptured frieze on three sides of the box which is gold on silver depicting significant events from Churchill’s life. Engraved on the fourth side is part of the speech delivered to the House of Commons on 4th June, 1940 “We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight…” etc. The heavy lid is polished silver and the box is lined with rosewood with leather under the base. It comes with a special black leather covered presentation case. The estimated value of this is $5,000 although there appears to have been one sold in auction at Sotheby’s for $32,000.  ...
