Winston Churchill. Illustrated. Heath Cranton Limited, 6 Fleet Lane, London E.C.4 1931 This is a vg+ copy with the original dust jacket which is quite scarce but what makes this really special is that it comes with the original typed forward signed “Winston Churchill” for his cousin Lionel Leslie’s book.  One page 4to, 24th April 1931, together with a typed letter signed (“Yours affectly W.”) to Lionel asking him to “Send me the book along if possible when it is in proof and I will see what I can do”, one page 4to, Chartwell 21st Jan. 1931. The book is preserved in a three quarter green calf clamshell book-like box with raised bands, contrasting red leather title label and green cloth sides. The forward and letter are preserved in a green cloth hard bound chemise with title label on front and the contained in a clamshell book-like box matching the one that contains the book. Presented to both Houses of Parliament by command of His Majesty, 1908. Only 750 copies of this report were printed which principally concerns Churchill’s visit to Cyprus between October 9th and 13th 1907, when Secretary of State for Colonies. The purpose of his visit, undertaken ‘en route’ to East Africa was to assess the financial needs of Britain’s small dependency and to impress on the population Britain’s intention to retain sovereignty. Among other items within the publication are ‘Mr. Churchill’s Reply to the Greek Elected Members, Memorial presented to Mr. Churchill by the Greek Elected Members’, a report on local expenditure by the High Commissioner and the Secretary of States reply to the proposed expenditure.
