MINIATURE PORTRAIT OF CHURCHILL ON IVORY by JAN MARKUT

Posted on Aug 18, 2012

BEAUTIFUL MINIATURE PORTRAIT OF WINSTON CHURCHILL ON IVORY by the Polish artist Jan Markut.

Jan Markut was trained at the finest art schools of the time in the German block. His roommate was a mistress of the Third Reich so he hid his valuable paintings under her bed to protect them from the Nazis. When he finally escaped to America he settled in Florida.

He made his own tempera paints with ground eggshells and often carved his frames. This miniature of Churchill measures 4” x 3”. The brush he used to paint this portrait on ivory was made from a single blade of horse hair.

It was exhibited at the London School of Miniatures Show – quite rare for someone not from Great Britain to be admitted into this show. Read more about Jan Markut
