Posted on Jan 1, 2012

The Gospel of Socialism, by Hector Macpherson with a preface by The Right Honorable Winston S. Churchill, [“A Forward on Socialism”] published by John Leng & Co. of London in [c. May, 1908.].
First Edition thus, 32pp., stapled as issued, original black and red illustrated paper wrappers.

The preface is the first printing, albeit abridged, of a speech delivered by Churchill in Kinnaird Hall, Dundee, on May 14th 1908, only 5 days after being returned to the House of Commons as Liberal M.P. for the constituency. It was published in its entirety in the book Liberalism and the Social Problem, 1909; a collection of the young Churchill’s speeches during his Liberal phase.

“Liberalism is not Socialism, and never will be.  There is a great gulf fixed. It is not a gulf of method, it is a gulf of principle. Don’t think that Liberalism is a faith that is played out; that it is a philosophy for which there is no expanding future. As long as the world rolls round, Liberalism will have its part to play – a grand, beneficient, and ameliorating part – in relation to men and States.”

MacPherson’s Gospel was first printed in the “Edinburgh Evening News” in August 1908.
This is a scarce pamphlet in very good condition.

Value: $1,200
