Gold Medallion – Gold Medal with a Portrait of Churchill

Posted on Jan 2, 2012

I believe this is the largest gold medal with a portrait of Churchill on it. Struck by Turner & Simpson Ltd., Birmingham in 1965, it is 22ct. gold, 3 inches in diameter and weighs 373grams (almost 12 ounces). This medallion commemorates the 25th Anniversary of the Atlantic Charter and features the portrait of Roosevelt as seen in the image below.

Background to this historic event: British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt (fdr) met in Placentia Bay, Newfoundland. The resulting agreement (codenamed Riviera) between the United Stated and Great Britain named The Atlantic Charter, was signed on August 14, 1941. This document did much to shape the course of the war and the post war period.

It is quite scare as only 250 were minted and I suspect many of them may have found the way to the melt over the years.
This is copy number 52 of 250.

Valuation: $18,000 but this is changing frequently with the large fluctuations of the gold price.
