CHURCHILL COMMEMORATIVE COINS – FALKLAND ISLANDS, TRISTAN DA CUNHA

Posted on Sep 25, 2012

4 Churchill Commemorative coins by the Royal Mint: each with a face value of 50 pence. 2 gold and 2 silver coins contained in plastic capsules in the original velvet-lined presentation case together with the Certificate of Authenticity. Limited to 120 sets: this is set #75

The Falkland Islands coin shows Winston Churchill in the uniform of Lord Warden and Admiral of the Cinque Ports, an ancient title which dates back to the 12th Century when the English ports of Hastings, Romney, Hythe, Dover and Sandwich joined together to provide and man a naval defense force. The Royal Navy did not exist at this time: this was its precursor.

King George VI conferred the honour on Churchill in September 1941 but the investiture did not take place until 1946, after the end of World War 2. The design also depicts H.M.S Nelson, a WWII battleship.

The Tristan da Cunha reverse shows Churchill in one of his favourite uniforms – that of the Royal Yacht Squadron. He had very strong links with the sea and particularly the Navy as he served as First Lord of the Admiralty on two occasions(1911-1915), and on the outbreak of the Second World War in (1939).

After the First World War, Churchill was appointed Secretary of State for War and also for Air, and played a major part in the modernization of the Navy and the development of air power. Fittingly the design also includes, in the background, the Spitfire and Hurricane – two of the famous fighter planes of WWII.

The obverse of both issues features the Raphael Maklouf portrait of H.M The Queen together with the country name and the denomination.
