Churchill Medals, Set of 8 – 1965 – Pater/Kohler, John Taylor Silversmiths

First of all, for anyone contemplating collecting Churchill related medals I highly recommend obtaining a copy of “The Medallic Portraits of Sir Winston Churchill” by J.Eric Engstrom. Sadly this book only goes up to the early 1970’s and I am not aware of anyone taking on the challenge of documenting all the Churchill medals/coins issued since then. You should be able to find a copy of this book for around $20 from one of the Churchill book dealers or possibly on the internet or AbeBooks.

The first item I will discuss is a set of 8 medals by Wieslaw Antoni Pater and Edgar John Kohler, emitted by John Taylor (Silversmiths) Ltd., London. In the Engstrom catalogue this is item #38. I understand that the issue price for the set of 8 medals was UK £160 in 1965. Due to the massive increase in the price of gold as of late this set will now cost you around $8,500 but I am not going to recommend it as an investment because of the volatility of the precious metals market. For reference, I purchased this set for $2,500 in 2002.

The set comprises two gold medals that are 22ct gold and limited to 500 copies weighing in at 109.5 grams and 41 grams. Two silver gilded medals at 65 grams/24 grams, two silver medals at 65 grams/24 grams and finally 2 bronze medals 70.2 grams and 21.4 grams. The two sizes are 2.25 inches and 1.5 inches or 57mm and 38mm for those who are metric. The gold medals are fully hallmarked with a Birmingham assay office stamp.

The obverse shows a full face portrait of Churchill while the reverse has the inscription THE RT. HON. SIR WINSTON SPENCER CHURCHILL, KG., OM., CH., 1874-1965 together with a laurel wreath.
