Churchill and Smuts Commemorative Medal, 1966 Engstrom 69

This set of medals is quite scarce as there were only 100 copies of the gold medal emitted. The medal was designed by A. Tromp and David MacGregor, South Africa and emitted by Bickels Coins and Medals (Pty.) Ltd., Johannesburg, struck by Metal Art (Pty.) Ltd. Pretoria West.
This is set No.1 of 100 sets of the 3 medals: 18 ct. gold, sterling silver and bronze. All 3 medals are 2 inches (51 mm) in diameter. The gold weighs 101gm (3.35 troy oz.), sterling silver weighs 67gm (2.15 troy oz.) There were 750 copies of the silver medal and 1,750 of the bronze.

The obverse has the head of Churchill and the reverse had the head of Smuts. This is a fine example and particularly unique, being No. 1 in the set. The medals are housed in a long custom fitted red case with red velvet and white satin lining.

Estimated value of this set: $5,500.
